Bio

Short

Bent Rushmore is a self-taught artist and musician from Tallinn, Estonia. For close to two decades he has drawn strange, faintly grotesque faces into small black sketchbooks. In 2026 he started painting them wall-sized in black and white. Winner and nominee of exactly zero awards.

Long

Bent Rushmore has been drawing odd, faintly grotesque faces into small black sketchbooks since around 2008, one at a time, in cafés and kitchens and on beaches across Tallinn, Pärnu and Berlin. Most of them he gave away. Over the years the faces piled up into a body of work he calls the Rushmore Family, first shown by the artist Martin Saar in his Tallinn gallery in 2018. In 2026 the faces grew up. Bent began enlarging them into wall-sized acrylic paintings in black and white, keeping the raw hand-drawn line. Every piece is a one-off, made and signed by hand, never reprinted. He is also a musician: he grew up in Soviet-era Estonia DJing his father’s smuggled vinyl, co-founded the band Köömes in 2006, and early in 2026 wrote his first film score, for the Estonian short Idioot.

Artist statement

I started drawing faces around 2008, out of boredom, in ballpoint on whatever paper was nearest. The stranger they came out, the better. I drew them everywhere and mostly gave them away. Twenty years on, the same faces have grown up. I paint them wall-sized in black and white, keeping the raw hand-drawn line. They are meant to be a little unsettling, and to make you feel something. Every piece is a one-off, made by hand, no reprints.
