About this work
Drawing a face is an exploration in itself. I never start with a direction I want to take when I make these paintings. I put my pencil on a fresh piece of canvas and let the lines draw themselves somehow. The emotion, the type of face, and most of all the feeling it carries are things that manifest themselves while I work. That is the journey. Sure, I plan a moustache like this one, but only when it comes down to it, a millisecond before I draw it. What the end result will feel like is as much a surprise to me as it is to anyone looking at these paintings and drawings.
The person who bought this piece said it looks like Salvador Dali, and I agree, though I never set out to picture him at all. I love how the background somehow turned silver and aggressive for this one.
