About this work
This is where the paintings started. It’s the first one Bent ever did on canvas, kept small on purpose, almost as a test to see what one of the little ink faces would look like blown up and painted. It worked. The face didn’t lose any of its strangeness at that size, if anything it got a little more unsettling, and a whole run of bigger paintings followed. Being the first, it has a rougher, more curious feel than the ones that came after it.
